ROUTINE MY ASS
An immersive spatial installation with 3D video art and set performative interventions. The space, a walk-in world, hybrid between analogue and digital, invites visitors to linger, rest and scroll. Thematically, the work takes a critical look at our relationship to productivity and rest. The starting point for the research is the pop-cultural internet phenomenon ‘That Girl’, a lifestyle trend from social media. The protagonist of the ‘that girl’ videos is usually a white, cis woman with ‘pretty privilege’. She gets up at 5 a.m., writes in her diary, eats a vegan breakfast, does workouts and devotes herself to elaborate skincare routines - all before the working day actually begins. She retreats into the domestic sphere, far away from political events and social relationships. What the consumers of these videos rarely see: Failure, (real) deceleration and communal empowerment. This phenomenon gets utilised on the one hand, as it provides an accessible reference and space for shared experiences as a pop-cultural element, and at the same time deconstructed by creating a collective body of care. The audience is invited to interact with us, the space and the interactive screens.
